Why Cholesterol Medications?
What are your options when diet, exercise and lifestyle changes are not enough to bring your cholesterol to healthy levels? Doctors will tell you that cholesterol medications step in when you need more help in lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) and raising your HDL (good cholesterol). Medication can decrease the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and thus decrease your risk for heart disease and medication can decrease your triglycerides, so that you risk for heart disease decreases, and medication can also increase the HDL, which protects your heart from disease. The choice of treatment may be a single drug or it may be a combination of drugs that will work together to have the desired effect. Drugs of choice for cholesterol are statins, bile acid binding resins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, and a combination of cholesterol absorption inhibitor and statin. There are also fibrates and niacin.
